Take an in-depth tour through New York’s burgeoning farm scene.

Farms aren’t the first thing that come to mind when one thinks of New York City. But walk along its streets and you will pass hundreds of urban gardens; jump across its rooftops and you might find yourself in the middle of a commercial farm. Heck, drive just 20 minutes from downtown and you could discover a full-fledged experimental farming community.

New York has a lot to offer — farming is no exception. This week, we visited three very different farmers and heard their take on the city and how growing food plays a role in (and is influenced by) the Big Apple. We met Annie Novak from Eagle Street Rooftop Farm in Greenpoint, Abu Talib from Taqwa Community Farm in the Bronx, and Jack Algiere from the Stone Barns Center. These three stories present a pretty diverse and spectacular picture of community and city life — and it’s New York through-and-through.

Which is better for optimum production – Pelleted Feed or Ground Feed?

When ostrich farming  a question often asked is whether it is better to have the feed pelleted or to feed the mix as a meal or ground.   The illustration shows the results of a trial comparing identical rations fed in ground form and pelleted.  The important factor when doing such a comparison is ensuring the formulas are exactly the same.  Pelleted or Ground Feed in Ostrich Farming  discusses the importance of understanding this factor.

Avg American Diet requires 1.2 acres of land
I could probably do it on half that.

this is a test on Flickr.
I planted seed for several types of perennials to see how or if they will endure the winter and produce seedlings come February and March. All of the trays are now covered with plastic sheeting in order to keep the seedling mix (coconut husk fiber) moist.

My garden in November is still blooming surprisingly. I love gardening because it helps me with patience and it helps me understand the universe better. It reminds me that no matter if you tend to the garden or forget every once and a while- life continues, growth and rebirth continues. Change happens. Accept it.

Could this be a pink cornflower? Is there such a thing? Where has this sprung up from?
